Suspected human skeletal remains found in Harrison County, Ind.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Authorities in Harrison County, Indiana, say they've found what they believe to be human skeletal remains near the Matthew E. Welsh Bridge in Mauckport.

"It's too early to say in the investigation whether this person has been there six months, a year , two years or more," said Lieutenant Nick Smith with the Harrison County Sheriff's.

According to the Harrison County Sheriff Rod Seelye, authorities are treating it as a death investigation.

"It's in a wooded remote area so it's not that large of an area," Smith said. "Of course, any of the rural property in our area it covers a great span."

A forensic anthropologist from Indianapolis has been contacted and is expected to examine the scene tomorrow.

Seelye will not divulge the exact location of the scene, but says it is near State Road 135 and the Ohio River in far southern Harrison County.

"A lot of things are really going to play into telling the story and surrounding the circumstances of the death of the individual," Smith said. "We'll leave this to the experts so we are working with a forensic anthropologist from the University of Indianapolis so they can help us in the excavation of the remains.'

That anthropologist is expected to be at the scene on Friday.
