STAR BioEnergy buys a familiar plot of land in the Louisville's west end

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Plans for a biodigester at the corner of 17th Street and Maple Street were met with protests and public outrage late last year.

West Louisville residents and community leaders banded together, making it clear they wouldn't stand for this type of development in their neighborhood.

It was that turmoil that caused STAR BioEnergy to withdraw its request for a permit and look elsewhere to build a biodigester.

But WDRB uncovered real estate records, which reveal that the same company has purchased what is the former biodigester site just last week for about $1.7 million.

STAR's lawyer says the company is finalizing details for the use of the property. Now, fear of the unknown has others asking still more questions about its future.

"That they still hold in the back of their mind that they will put a digester here," said Metro Councilman David James. "So if that's what their intent is, it's my job to make sure that doesn't happen. I'm very suspicious about the company. I'm very suspicious about their motives."

The purchased land includes the Schenley Distillery building, property that was once promised to Simmons College, Kentucky State University and other west Louisville organizations if the initial plans moved forward.

But West Louisville leaders say it's not too late for STAR's CEO to give back to the community.

"He can give it to the community today," said Clay Calloway of the West Louisville Ministries Coalition. "So if that is his intent -- if that is his motivation -- we'd be happy to support him in that beneficiary endeavor. But we don't hold on hopes to anything Steve Estes or Star Energy does."

STAR BioEnergy is expected to reveal its plans for the property in the next two weeks.
