Planned Parenthood says it will cease abortion procedures in compliance with state order

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Planned Parenthood has agreed to stop providing any abortion related services in Kentucky in response to an order from Cabinet for Health and Family Services to do so, according to a letter dated Jan. 29.

A letter sent from the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services Thursday ordered Louisville's Planned Parenthood facility to cease performing abortions, effective immediately. The letter said the facility’s license application was “deficient for multiple reasons.”

In the organization’s response to the state, Planned Parenthood said it had begun “providing services only after receiving assurance from [the office of the acting inspector general], in emails dated Dec. 1 and Dec. 7 that it would be appropriate while [the organization] awaited survey.”

"The Commonwealth acted swiftly to end these unlawful procedures, and we will continue to investigate the matter thoroughly,” Gov. Matt Bevin said in a statement Thursday night.

However, after the letter ordering the organization to cease abortion related procedures, Planned parenthood said it will comply until the inspector general’s office has finalized its licensing.
