Louisville nightclub owner gathering water donations for community in Michigan

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville nightclub owner is working with the West Louisville Urban Coalition to collect water donations to give to Flint, Michigan.

The donations were collected at Lyle's Mall on South 28th Street from 6 a.m. until 1 p.m.

As the sun rose volunteers began to show up in numbers, bringing with them plenty of water cases.

"It's important to help out because they have lead in their water so they can't use their water so somebody needs to give them water," said Tyrin Bizor.

Flint is at the center of a water crisis. The toxic tap water pulled from the Flint River is discolored and unsafe to drink or bathe in.

"It just breaks my heart because of that and that's why I wanted to do something from our community to send to them," said Yozette Borges.

It's a shock for many that in the United States in 2016 a community doesn't have clean, safe drinking water. Mayor Greg Fischer says he couldn't be more proud of what Louisville is doing.

"Coming together to help people in Flint, Michigan to have one of the most basic things that we take for granted and that's clean water," said Fischer.

Car by car and case by case, the water filled a 53-foot truck. Leaders with the West Louisville Urban Coalition originally doubted if they could collect that much water.

"Is it possible for us to do that? Now we're working on truck number 4," said James Linton.

They collected enough water to surpass their goal by a long shot. How that happened, is relayed in the wisdom from the youngest of volunteers.

"You should help out. It's just nice," said Bizor.

Eagle Steel Products offered to haul the donations to Flint in a semi-truck.

Donations can still be made to Cole's Place.
