HENRY CO. Ky. (WDRB) -- A corrections officer is behind bars, accused of raping a 12-year-old family member. But the suspect's family says he doesn't belong in jail.

The suspect is 59-year-old Robert Heitzman. He was arrested Friday by detectives from Kentucky State Police. His family is furious because they say these allegations are from 1975.

"I was surprised when they came and arrested him, yes," said Kathy Heitzman, Robert Heitzman's wife.

Kathy Heitzman said her husband's arrest was the talk of the town.

"He has been charged with rape of a child under the age of 12," Kathy said.

She said the couple has custody of several grandchildren and it's not what you think it is.

"The whole community thinks it's one of my grand kids, this has nothing to do with my grand kids."

According to Henry County court documents, Robert Heitzman was arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old family member more than 40 years ago.

"This is an alleged charge from 41 years ago when he was 19-years-old and the victim was 12," said Kathy Heitzman.

Kentucky State Police detectives in Campbellsburg are investigating the allegation.

"A family member came to post recently and alleged that she was sexually abused by Mr. Heitzman between the years of 1975 and 1980," said Sgt. Charlie Kelton, with KSP in Campbellsburg post.

Heitzman said the alleged victim is a relative but not someone she knows.

"I don't know nothing about her, I've never talked to the woman, I don't, I wouldn't know her if I saw her now," she said.

Meanwhile, Heitzman told WDRB News that her husband is a guard at The Kentucky Corrections Institution for Women in Pewee Valley.

"He has got 14 months to retirement, and I don't know what this, I don't know what this is about," she said.

Right now, Heitzman is being held on a $15,000 bond. He is scheduled to be in court on Feb. 11.
