San Francisco may soon distribute condoms to middle-school students

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Condoms could soon be available to students in sixth grade in San Francisco.

A school board committee is currently considering the proposal. The district says it has worked at the high school level, where the program's been in place for 25 years.

"We believe that with the education it actually lessens the amount of sexual activity, lessens the amount of sexually transmitted infections as well as pregnancies," said Kevin Gogin, of the San Francisco Unified School District.

"It's not their job. It's not their job," said a parent. "It's not their call. It's our call. I think it comes down to the parents."

The district says a recent survey showed five percent of middle school students say they've had sex.
