LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- A homeowner fired her gun in self-defense last Thursday, fatally shooting Joseph Krueger, 43.

Krueger was breaking into a home near Iroquois Park and the woman shot him because it looked like he had a weapon and was going to rob her, according to police.

Court documents indicate Krueger was a convicted felon with criminal charges dating back to the early 90s.

His most recent conviction was in 2014 when he was sentenced to four years in prison for wanton endangerment and fleeing and evading police.

Court video from 2014 shows Krueger pleading guilty and being sentenced to four years in prison by Judge Olu Stevens.

But records show he was released in Sept. 2015 after serving just one year of his sentence. Four months later, he would allegedly break the law again -- this time paying with his life.

Krueger spent eleven years in prison on burglary charges from 1993 to 2005, court documents show.

He served a two year sentence on the same charges from 2006-2008.

He served another two years from 2010 to 2012 on receiving stolen property charges.

WDRB has inquired with the Department of Corrections and Krueger’s attorney to learn why or on what conditions he was released from prison in 2015.

The home invasion case is under investigation.
