Police looking for suspect that stole political coins valued at more than $1 million from Highlands home
Police are looking for a man they say broke into a Highlands home and stole rare political coins and jewelry worth more than $1 million.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police are looking for a man they say broke into a Highlands home and stole rare political coins and jewelry worth more than $1 million.
Authorities say it happened on Dec. 27 just after 2 a.m. on Woodford Place in the Highlands.
Surveillance video captured the thief's image, but the homeowner says he doesn't recognize him.
"The victim was out of town at this time," said LMPD Detective Leo Dattilo. "The victim was out of town at this time. A 19th century political campaign coin collection, roughly 1200 pieces, along with an antique brass compass, jewelry, cash and silverware were all taken."
Some of the coins have turned up in Pennsylvania.
It's unknown if the victim has insurance on his collection or if he's gotten any of the coins back.
“We have other states assisting us right now. Anything is possible. I really don't know,” said Dattilo.
Because the case has surpassed a million dollar value and is now a multi-state investigation, there's a chance federal authorities could step in to help.
If you recognize the man in the surveillance images, call the LMPD crime tipline at 574-LMPD.
