Sixty local businesses donate proceeds to struggling restaurant workers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local organization in Louisville is trying to help restaurant workers make ends meet.

Kelsi Haberman gave birth to her third child a few months ago -- and just when she thought it was time to go back to work, the unthinkable happened.

"I came to work to find that there was nowhere to work anymore. All the firefighters were out front," Haberman said.  "I was shocked."

Crews responded to a fire that set two St. Matthews restaurants ablaze. One of those businesses happened to be SuperChefs, where Haberman earns a living.

"I was scared. I didn't know what I was going to do," said Haberman.

Thinking she had nowhere left to turn, a friend told her about Apron.

"Apron paid my month's worth of rent. They also paid my LG&E for the month and my water bill for the month so my bills were taken care of," Haberman explained.

The local organization provides temporary financial aid to professionals in need who work in locally owned restaurants. These workers have either experienced financial distress due to an illness, injury or other life-changing hardships

Apron donated more than $10,000 to restaurant workers after the St. Matthews fire and nearly depleted its funds.

In an effort to raise more money, Apron hosted Dine-Around 2016 on Wednesday.

The Irish Rover is one of 60 restaurants donating a portion of Wednesday's sales to the organization.

"In the restaurant business, you're pretty much on your own," said Michael Reidy, owner of The Irish Rover. "The little thing we can do by giving a contribution we'll gladly do."

It's fundraisers like these that helped Haberman get back on her feet. She said she can't thank Apron and its supporters enough.

"You all have helped tremendously. I don't think I could put it into words what it means to me and my children."
