CRAWFORD | Petrino stresses defense when introducing 23-player class

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — I’ve covered a lot of Louisville signing days, and the truth of all of them is, you don’t really know going in who the stars are going to be.

I can think of only a few guys who, on signing day, you felt like were “program changers” from the first day. There have been some, of course. Chris Redman. Brian Brohm. Mike Bush. Teddy Bridgewater.

More often, tomorrow’s stars, at least where this program is concerned, are faces in the crowd. When Elvis Dumervil signed, nobody welcomed him like a rock star. When Stefan LeFors signed, they weren’t dancing in the streets. Gary Barnidge, Kolby Smith, William Gay, Kerry Rhodes, everybody thought they were good, but none of us knew how good.

The key for Louisville, because it isn’t in the recruiting stratosphere of Florida State or Clemson or other national powers, is evaluating intelligently, developing well, and finding players who fit the coaching staff and system.

In the three major recruiting services — Scout, Rivals and 24/7 — the 24-player class signed by the Cardinals on National Signing Day Wednesday ranked seventh in the ACC, and from 37-40 nationally.

“I really feel like this class that we signed today is what we started working on when we arrived here,” Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said. “The relationships with the high school coaches, understanding who the freshmen, sophomores and juniors are in our areas and at our schools. We had a number of guys we signed today that were at junior day last year. . . . It was the product of a lot of hard work.”

It was a defensive-oriented class. If foundations are built along the lines, Louisville added to its already strong defensive front, though having only one offensive line signee is curious.

“We felt like we really had to do a good job of getting our defense replenished,” Petrino said. “A year ago we got a lot of good offensive players, so going into it we went in with the idea of doing a really good job defensively.”

The biggest key was getting four NFL-quality players back. And the Cards accomplished that when DeVonte Fields, DeAngelo Brown, Keith Kelsey and Josh Harvey-Clemons all announced in January that they will return.

But 12 of the Cards’ 23 recruits are defensive players, including one of their top-rated additions, safety London Iakopo from Santa Ana, California, one of three safeties to sign.

“We were able to get four guys in the secondary,” Petrino said. “We feel like we got three safeties who can really come downhill and tackle, but also have the ability to cover. With the spread offenses and tempo offenses it’s very important that you have safeties who can do both. “

Jawon Pass, the four-star quarterback from Columbus, Ga., who committed last fall but took a late trip to Alabama, stuck with the Cards and will come in with some time to develop.

Wideout Dez Fitzpatrick from Farmington Hills, Mich., is a highly rated receiver at a position where Petrino took four new additions, more than he planned, “but sometimes when you get down to the last 2-3 spots, you can’t pass up a great player,” Petrino said.

The Cards signed players from 10 states, hitting the state of Georgia hard, with eight signees. They also added a trio of Kentucky players, including Manual defensive lineman Derek Dorsey, DeSales punter Austin Johnson and Male wideout Keion Wakefield.

From U of L, a player-by-player look at Louisville’s class:
