California man arrested for pretending to be priest, stealing donations

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A fake priest is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from people in his church in Los Angeles.

Police say 59-year-old Erwin Mena has pretended to be a priest at Los Angeles-area churches since the mid-90s.

During that time, police say Mena officiated weddings, funerals and Baptisms, and stole thousands of dollars in fake donations from parishioners.

"We've been working with the police on this," Edwin Duyshart, Pastor at St. Ignatius of Loyola, said. "He's been at many other parishes too and that's why we kind of didn't think twice at first when he said he was helping other parishes."

Police say they started investigating Mena when he sold people fake tickets to see the Pope in Philadelphia last year.
