LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Visit an area where the Zika virus is most prominent and you may not be able to give blood.

As the Zika virus raises concerns, officials are looking to be cautious in the face of a possibly widespread outbreak.

The Kentucky Blood Center is asking donors to wait 28 days after traveling to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central or South America.

It is not yet known whether the virus can be transmitted through blood donation. So, for now, officials are taking the cautionary step.

They're asking those who can give blood to step up and fill the void.
