Snowed in: using a different kind of horsepower

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Parts of Minnesota were hit hard with blizzard conditions Tuesday, and that meant police had to get creative.

Police were struggling with how to patrol the streets of St. Paul with all that snow. So, they traded in their horsepower for, well, horse power.

Ditching their squad cars, the officers hopped on horses. Extra grips on the horses hooves allows the animals to keep their balance in the snow.

"They love it, they're eating snow, kicking it around," Officer Matt Jones said about how the horses handle the winter weather.

"A squad car can't go as fast cause you're gonna spin out, and on foot is gonna slip just as much," he added.

Officers patrolled the streets checking mainly for traffic violations and checking on neighbors.  When the horses are not patrolling the streets, they get to enjoy their days at a nearby farm.
