LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Valentine's Day may still be days away, but some local children are already preparing.

Students at St. Nicholas Academy and Dixie Elementary helped Representative John Yarmuth make Valentines today, to be distributed at the VA hospital.

This is the seventh year for the crafting event.

Yarmuth says hundreds of cards are usually passed out ahead of Valentine's Day, and the veterans love getting them.

"They say, 'Wow!' and then when I tell them these are youngsters from around the community, they smile and their eyes light up because these young people want to show respect for the veterans," Yarmuth said.

Yarmuth says 500 Valentine cards were delivered in 2015.

He works with students to make cards for veterans for Christmas as well.
