Former Gov. Beshear launching campaign to keep Kentucky's health care exchange

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Former Governor Steve Beshear is launching a very public fight against the man who replaced him.

Governor Matt Bevin says he's going to dismantle Kynect, which is ex-Governor Beshear's signature accomplishment. But Beshear now says Kynect is not going down without a fight.

Beshear created Kynect as part of the Affordable Care Act. It's a portal - an online marketplace - allowing people sign up for either private health insurance or Medicaid.

It has received national recognition, but Governor Bevin says it's too expensive. It would be cheaper, he says, for customers to use the federal exchange.

But Beshear is fighting back, launching a campaign called "Save Kentucky Healthcare" which includes an online petition and a marketing effort.

"For reasons he hasn't fully explained, Governor Bevin is working to take away healthcare from people who for so long desperately needed it but didn't have it," Beshear said. "I'm not going to let that opportunity be taken away from them not without a fight."

It's unusual for a former governor to so openly oppose his successor, but Beshear says his conscience would not let him ride off into the sunset.

Beshear is launching a statewide petition to encourage Governor Bevin to keep the health care exchange set up before he took office. To learn more about Save Kentucky Healthcare, visit:
