Amid Valentine's rush, love is in the air at UPS Worldport

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Valentine’s Day holiday is one of the busiest times of the year at UPS Worldport and it’s all in the name of love.

Louisville has quickly turned into the Valentine's Day hub with dozens of planes filled with millions of gifts and Cupid’s helpers working in teams.

The gift that keeps on coming: flowers.

“We'll actually ship, by the time it's all over with, about 100 million flowers during this time period,” said Michelle Polk, a UPS PR supervisor.

That's enough flowers to fill about 70 cargo aircraft.

“Most of them coming in are flower imports from Columbia and Ecuador,” said Polk. “Once they're at World, they're basically being sorted so we can prep them to go to different parts of the U.S.”

But flowers aren't the only gift that'll make someone's heart smile.

These workers say they've seen it all.

“Rings, I've seen bears, plants, roses, heart shaped candy boxes, all kinds of stuff,” said UPS employee Jaclyn Hurst|

According to the National Retail Federation, U.S. consumers are expected to spend almost 20 billion on Valentine's presents this year.

And what's a romantic evening without a great meal?

“We'll be getting a lot of Omaha steaks. We are seeing a lot of that kind of volume coming through our network,” Polk said. “It is a lot of pressure but it's definitely a pressure that we look forward to and we can handle. UPS has you covered.”

For people waiting until the last minute, you’re in luck. You can ship as late as Friday by using UPS Next Day Air and your gifts will arrive on Valentine’s Day.
