'Visiting Angels' bring Valentine's cheer to those who've lost loved ones

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Valentine's Day is just two days away and, for many, the holiday is about love.

For some, however, it's also a painful reminder of loss.

“He had the prettiest hair it was just waves,” Gerri Spangler remembered as she stared at her husband's picture.

It's just one of the many things Spangler loved about her husband.

"He was real affectionate and if something happened to me. When I went to ... the hospital or somethin' he cried with me," she said.

Gerri met Bascom 80 years ago -- when she was just 15 -- and he's been with her ever since.

Their love survived the depression, the war, it even survived the World War II veteran's death in 2003.

"I still put a plate out for him if I don't think of it," Spangler said. "We enjoyed our life together. I sure miss him."

Her loss is especially overwhelming on Valentine's Day.

So this holiday, members of the Visiting Angels are hoping to fill that void.

Caregivers normally help their clients with daily activities. But this week they're also surprising those who've lost loved ones with "Blossoms of Love" donated by Nanz & Kraft Florist.

"There's lots of memories there and Valentine's Day can bring about some loneliness," Visiting Angels' director Andy Block said.

But said simple gestures like flowers, candy or conversation can go a long way.

"A simple thing like flowers reduced depression in 81 percent of them," Block said.

Though Gerri says she'll always miss her husband, she was grateful for the flowers and happily accepted them.

"We'll put them in there and get some water in there for them," she said.
