With 'Brackets for Good,' everybody wins

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A little friendly competition will go a long way this year to helping some of your favorite local charities.

The annual "Brackets for Good" gets started on Friday, Feb. 26, and takes place in cities across the U.S.

The bracket for the Louisville area was just released. It has a list of 64 local charities that will take part and who they'll compete with in the first round.

The goal is simple -- to see which charity can raise the most money for its cause.

Brackets for Good works just like the basketball tournament, but instead of two teams going head-to-head it's two charities. The winner moves forward and keeps raising funds for the next round.

A kick-off event was held Tuesday in Louisville. Several charities competing were at the event sharing their organization's information.

"The big thing is just getting our story out there, so our donor base knows what we are doing," Deborah Morton with FEAT (Families for Effective Autism Treatment) of Louisville said.

"They know the work we are doing, they know the children who need help, but this is encouraging them to [donate] money because they know that one dollar equals one point," she added.

The charity that makes it to the final 'game' and wins gets a bonus check. All non-profits that take part get to keep 100 percent of the donations they raise.
