LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say they have arrested the man who shot a mail carrier last week.

Eric Bennett was arraigned Wednesday morning on charges of attempted murder and assault.

An arrest report alleges the 37-year-old shot mail carrier Daron Lester more than once while the victim was working his route along Dearborn Avenue on Feb. 10.

The mail carrier was taken to University Hospital and is expected to recover.

“I think the whole neighborhood is relieved that somebody like that got caught,” said Michael Crawford, who lives near the shooting scene.

“[The victim] is a good guy. He trained my daughter. She’s a mail carrier,” Crawford went on. “It was a relief to know that somebody has to pay for that.”

Court records show Bennett was taken into custody around 8 p.m. Tuesday on Manslick Road.

“There were two large booms that shook the whole neighborhood,” described one neighbor, who wanted his identity concealed. “I came out and some neighbors came out, and there were SWAT team guys running everywhere. There were about 30 police cars up and down my street, and in those driveways.”

The arrest report states Bennett is a convicted felon and indicates prosecutors will likely seek a federal indictment.

During Bennett's arraignment Wednesday, a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. A public defender was also appointed.

The judge labeled Bennett a “flight risk” and a danger. His bond was originally set at $100,000, but the judge raised it to $500,000 cash during Bennett's arraignment.
