Senate Bill proposing Ky. college tuition freeze dies in committee

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Senate Bill in Kentucky that would freeze tuition for state colleges and universities died in committee Thursday.

Senator Dan Seum (R), who sponsored the bill, told the Senate Education Committee that universities are ripping off students with their annual tuition hikes.

He wants to freeze tuition for four years and then make the schools get permission from the legislature before they raise them again.

University Presidents and a group representing Study Body Presidents oppose the bill.

A motion to approve the bill died for lack of a second.

"I think the universities are very powerful. There are eight presidents and they put the word out, but the fight's not over," Seum said.

A tuition freeze bill has also been introduced in the House.
