LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A father who saved his daughter from their burning home died shortly afterward.

Firefighters raced to the Buffalo, NY, home early Friday morning. They said the father of three carried his nine-year-old daughter to safety.

"It was horrible. The poor little girl. I just heard someone banging on the door. I didn't realize something was happening till we opened the door," Sharon Mack, a neighbor of the family, said. "When I opened the door, I grabbed this little girl. I thought it was soot on her till I turned my hallway light on her. Then I realized that her face, her hair, her feet were burned."

The girl's father then went back inside the engulfed home to look for the rest of his family. He never came out again.

The nine-year-old has severe burns on 90-percent of her body. The man's four-year-old son and two year old child are both okay.

However, a man who lived upstairs in the home also died. Two firefighters had minor burns.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.

"We'll look to see if there were any housing code violations, all those kinds of things will be looked at," Garnell Whitfield, Buffalo Fire Commissioner, said.

"Were there smoke detectors? Were they operational?  All those things will be looked at, you know, in the investigation," he continued.

Officials have not yet named the victims.
