LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man is facing numerous charges, including attempted murder, after police say he brutally attacked a woman during an argument over the weekend.

According to the arrest report, it happened Saturday afternoon at a residence in the 1800 block of West Madison Street, not far from Muhammad Ali Blvd.

Police say 26-year-old Valda Andrews was arguing with a woman when he hit her body, head and face several times. Police say the victim lost consciousness when Andrews choked her at least three times.

When the victim and her children tried to call for help, police say Andrews threatened to kill the victim and her children before removing all phones from the home.

Police say Andrews then held wire cutters to the victim's neck and stabbed her in the stomach and right thigh with a screwdriver.

When officers arrived, several witnesses stated that Andrews was "on spice." As officers were searching Andrews for weapons, he began to beat his head on the rear of the police vehicle before officers wrestled him to the ground.

"You have to understand, that wasn't my son," said Terri Andrews, the suspect's mother.

Andrews says she called 911 when the victim showed up at her house, "I saved that girl's life," she said.

A neighbor who lives in the area did not want to be identified, but said police have been called there before.

"Something happened to her this time obviously where she was very hurt," said the neighbor.  "If it seems like you need to get involved, just always think what if you were in that situation, you would want someone to do the right thing."

Police say Andrews had two baggies of spice in his pants pockets and tried to eat some of it while he was in the back of the police vehicle, where he dropped some on the seat and floor. He was taken to University Hospital before being booked into Metro Corrections.

Andrews is now charged with attempted murder, wanton endangerment, unlawful imprisonment, intimidating a participant in the legal process, assault, terroristic threatening, possession of salvia, tampering with physical evidence, and resisting arrest.

He remains jailed at Louisville Metro Corrections on a $100,000 full cash bond.
