Car smashes into Captain's Cellar liquor store on Brownsboro Road

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A popular liquor store on Brownsboro Road is closed after a car smashed into it Thursday morning.

“It was pretty quick. They had her out in I'd say 20 seconds,” said Joe Schaftlein, owner of Captain’s Cellar.

Schaftlein has owned Captain's Cellar package liquor store for 32 years.

On Thursday morning, it was business as usual until a car came crashing through his store's front window, smashing part of the building's foundation and about three rows of inventory.

"I was at my counter. It was about 10:45, saw a car start sliding into my parking lot. I had my van right here, thought it was going to hit that and she swerved and went right into the building and knocked me about 20 feet back,” said Schaftlein.

Schaftlein was standing at the cash register, just inches from the wreckage.

"Once I saw it was going to hit the building, I started toward the back and all the inventory and everything got pushed back,” he said.

Schaftlein's insurance company is right next door.

He thinks almost everything can be replaced.

"I mean there were some good bourbons in there, don't get me wrong. But I don't know what survived and what didn't,” he told WDRB.

Officials didn't say what caused the accident but witnesses say two cars were involved.

"It was an accident. Like I said, I'm just glad no one was injured,” he said.

Another employee who works nights at the store says they've had a few close calls before.

“We've had a couple times where people have driven into the parking spot and up on the curb and hit one of the trash cans and into the window so just as precaution, we park our cars in that one spot where we have the cash register,” said Patrick Hinkle.

Those at the barber shop next door told WDRB that stretch of Brownsboro Road needs a caution light or an extra middle lane to slow down traffic.

“One day there's going to be a fatality out here. Someone is going to get killed,” said Mike.

There have been proposals in the past to change that area of Brownsboro Road to slow cars down but no plans have ever been put in place.

Captain's Cellar is closed for the time being and will likely reopen in a few days.
