Thief poses as server at Cafe Lou Lou and gets away

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Customers dining in the Highlands at Cafe Lou Lou Tuesday night had an unexpected ending to their meal.

"We had a guy come in, he sat at the bar, ordered a beer and an appetizer, just like a normal customer. He seemed like a normal customer at first," said Clay Wallace, the owner of Café Lou Lou.

Except he wasn't just a normal customer.

"He went outside to smoke a cigarette, he came back ordered his dinner and a second beer. Then he got up a second time to use the restroom," said Wallace.

The restrooms are at the back of the dining room, so he noticed a large party waiting to pay the bill as he passed by.

"As he came back in, he snatched the payments and took off. And I say snatched, he nonchalantly walked up to the table and grabbed them and I think that's why everyone kind of thought, 'Oh, maybe he works here,'" said Wallace.

Wallace says the suspect picked up multiple credit cards and $80 cash and walked straight out the front door.

"Once the guy gets 20 feet down the stairs, literally probably 20 feet, everybody was kind of like this isn't right," said Wallace.

The customers and the servers quickly realized what happened and chased after him.

"He got that 15 foot head start that he needed and we weren't able to get him. I'm not sure if we wanted to get him to be honest," said Wallace.

A customer posted a photo of the man's face from the restaurant's surveillance video on Facebook.

Wallace says four people have already called him, saying they recognize the suspect.

"You know the power of social media has been great. A customer posted on Facebook and I have a feeling this fellow will be apprehended in the next day or two," said Wallace.

As of right now, the customers and staff of Cafe Lou Lou will have to wait for that to happen.

"Unfortunately, we live in a day and age where things like this happen and you know, you just have to be observant of what's going on around you in anything you do," said Wallace.

The owner reminds people to be aware of their surroundings when dining in at any restaurant and to make sure you pay attention to who your server is in the future.
