LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A stirring comeback from the 7th region favorite highlighted semi-final day in the area girls region basketball at Valley High School Wednesday.
Male came into the 7th region semi-final with a 28-2 record, with both losses coming to 6th region power Butler. But the Lady Dogs appeared to be headed to their first loss within the region after getting dominated in the first half by Sacred Heart. Male cranked up the pressure and kept chipping away at the Valkyries 29-10 halftime advantage, finally drawing even on a coast-to-coast double-clutch lay-in by Ciaja Harbison as time ran out in regulation. I'liyah Green led Male with 21 as they prevailed 63-62 in overtime. Kiki Samsel's 21 points led three Sacred Heart players in double figures.
They get Manual in Saturday's 5:30 pm final at Valley. The Crimsons got 21 from Jaela Johnson and 17 from Tonysha Curry in a surprisingly one-sided 68-37 win over Eastern.
The Sixth Region winners were Mercy and Butler. Mercy had four in double figures, led by Jessica Laemmle's 15 (without a missed shot) in a 76-55 win over Pleasure Ridge Park. Jaelynn Penn led four in double figures with 15 as Butler beat Bullitt East 58-49 in the nightcap. Lindsey Duvall had 17 for the Lady Chargers.
Mercy and Butler will meet for the region title Saturday at 7:30 pm.
