AT&T is the largest provider of residential gigabit service in the nation.
Through AT&T’s GigaPower network, we are delivering speeds up to one gigabit per second to residential customers in cities across the country. Today, GigaPower is operating in 20 cities with plans for an additional 36. Compare that to Google Fiber’s four cities and it’s clear, AT&T isn’t just talking about gigabit service, we’re providing it everyday. And this year, we will begin providing GigaPower service right here in Louisville!
With that said, I would like to set the record straight as it pertains to the prospect of Google Fiber in Louisville. Although we have asked a federal court to rule that the Metro Council lacked authority to adopt its recent “one-touch” pole ordinance, we do not stand in opposition to Google Fiber; in fact, we welcome them to the community.
AT&T’s court action does not impede Google from deploying their infrastructure; rather we are asking the court to find that the FCC and PSC have appropriate jurisdiction over pole attachments, not the City of Louisville. To the best of our knowledge, Google has been deploying fiber in four other cities across the country without need for measures like this one.
AT&T will continue investing in this community to make Louisville a Fiber Ready city. All we ask in return is that, going forward, we focus on policies that balance the needs of consumers and the entire industry, not just one newcomer.
I’m Hood Harris and that’s my Point of View.
