Hundreds of people take the plunge into the Ohio River to raise money for Special Olympics

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's known as the "coolest" annual fundraiser, because jumping in icy water can literally take your breath away.

About 800 people jumped into the Ohio River on Saturday, taking the Polar Plunge near Doc's Cantina.

This was the 18th year for the event in Louisville. There were four others across the state helping to raise money for Special Olympics Kentucky.

Some plungers dressed up, competing in the costume contest.

The cooler temps did not make things any easier.

Last year's plunge raised $225,000. The goal this year was to hit at least $200,000.
