Louisville Classical Academy student wins 23rd annual KDF Spelling Bee

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Students from across Kentucky and southern Indiana competed Saturday to be the region's top speller.

Ten-year-old Tara Singh from Louisville Classical Academy was the winner of the 23rd annual Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee. 

She won on the word Eponym and beat out 62 other competitors.

Every student had to win their school and county spelling bees to be eligible to compete Saturday. 

KDF organizers say the competition is a way to make spelling fun.

"It focuses on education and helps highlight those students who are excelling at their schools and in the counties in Kentucky and southern Indiana," said Aimee Boyd, Kentucky Derby Festival organizer.

The top-5 students took home scholarship savings bonds. 

The winner's was worth $10,000.
