LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police have arrested a suspect in shooting that killed a man back in October.

Devontez Grinter, 19, is facing a murder charge after police say he shot and killed Kevin Deramus on the morning of Oct. 24 on Lynnview Drive just off Crums Lane.

“I didn't know what was going on,” said Diresse Fields, a friend and neighbor of Deramus. “I just heard yelling. ‘He shot him, he shot him!’ So I ran up the steps, and he was laying there.”

For more than four months, no one was arrested for the crime. Now, police say Grinter is responsible. He turned himself into police on Friday.

“Even though I hurt, the pain of his children, his family, to get justice for Kevin, it’s so much better." Fields said.

Fields says Grinter was living with Deramus at the time of the shooting and was his soon-to-be son-in-law.

“It's been rough. It's been extremely rough,” Fields said. “It's been hard, especially, to know he didn't deserve that. Nobody deserves to die like that.”

Fields says she woke up the morning of the murder to someone knocking on her window

“He was laying on the ground right outside my first window, and I just came outside and tried to help him,” she said.

But she was unable to do anything for her longtime friend.

“I remember detail for detail on everything,”  Fields said. “How he laid there. How he didn't suffer long. I'm glad that he wasn't alone. I was at least there with him. When he took his final breaths, I was right there.”

Grinter faces a murder charge as well as tampering with evidence charge. He’s being held at Metro Corrections on a $50,000 cash bond.
