Reward offered after bald eagle shot and killed in western Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Kentucky and federal authorities are investigating the shooting death of a bald eagle near the Land Between the Lakes area in western Kentucky around the end of 2015.

A Kentucky conservation officer found the mature eagle on Paradise Road in Grand Rivers, Ky., in Livingston County, on January 8. The shooting is thought to have happened between December 25, 2015 and January 2, according to a news release.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is offering a $2,500 reward for information that leads to a conviction in the case. The agency and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources are conducting the inquiry.

The numbers of bald eagles shot in the southeastern U.S. vary each year, said Tom MacKenzie, spokesman for the Fish and Wildlife Service. It wasn’t immediately clear when the last shooting of an eagle occurred in Kentucky.

In 2011, officials started investigating the death of an eagle found shot in Calloway County. A Fish and Wildlife Service Agent in Louisville didn’t immediately return a phone message left Tuesday about the status of the case.

Most bald eagles in Kentucky nest in the western part of the state, and in 2013 were found in 54 counties, according to the state.

Kentucky’s bald eagle population was taken off a federal list of threatened or endangered species in 2007, but the birds are protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Those laws call for up to a year in prison and $100,000 in fines for killing or injuring the eagles.

The eagle killed in Livingston County was at least five years old. Anyone with information is asked to call the Fish and Wildlife Service at 270-252-7336 or Kentucky Fish and Wildlife conservation officer Evan Ethington at 270-890-3300.
