Bill calling for increase in minimum wage passes House committee

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A bill to boost Kentucky's minimum wage is on its way to the House.

The bill would raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.10 an hour. It passed a House committee along party lines, with all Democrats voting for the bill. The bill's sponsor, House Speaker Greg Stumbo, says this proposal is a compromise.

A bill to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour over three years died in the last session.

"I think it's time to give some relief to minimum wage workers," Stumbo said. "It sends a pretty positive signal out there to them. The states that have done this, and the private companies that have done this, have not seen a negative impact at all."

The bill would exempt businesses that make $500,000 a year or less.
