Westport Middle teachers to hold parent-teacher conference in Portland neighborhood
About one-third of Westport Middle’s 1,200 students live in the Portland neighborhood, so half of the school's teachers will be at The Table Cafe from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Westport Middle is trying something new and different with its parent-teacher conferences on Thursday -- half of its teachers will be based 15 miles away in the Portland neighborhood.
Principal Jodie Zeller says about half of his teachers will meet with parents at the school, located at 8100 Westport Road, while the other half will be available to meet and chat with parents at The Table Cafe, 1800 Portland Avenue.
About one-third of Westport Middle’s 1,200 students live in the Portland neighborhood, Zeller said.
And with the amended Jefferson County Public Schools parent-teacher conference day (Feb. 29 was supposed to be a full parent-teacher conference day for JCPS, but instead it was used as a snow make-up day), this gave Westport a chance to experiment with something different.
"The idea behind this is to bring the school to the community," Zeller said. "It's a new way for us to try and reach parents who otherwise might not be able to attend parent-teacher conferences.”
Zeller said he worked with his's school PTSA to help organize the satellite location.
“It’s something we’ve been talking about…finding different ways to reach our parents," Zeller said. "It’s really going to be an informal way for us to do some outreach….many of our families often times don’t have the means to make it out to Westport.”
He said those at The Table Café are also very excited about the opportunity to connect parents with the school.
“They are excited to partner with us and meet the needs….they want to support the community as well," he said.
“We do have a lot of parent involvement at Westport, our Montessori magnet program helps with that," he said. "For some reason, parental involvement tends to taper off at the middle school level and it's up to schools to find different ways to keep that involvement going."
Other JCPS schools have tried the satellite location for parent-teacher conferences -- but this is the first time Westport has tried something like this, Zeller said.
If you are a parent of a student of a Westport Middle School parent, you are invited to attend either parent-teacher conference site from 3:30 to 5:30pm on Thursday, March 10. No appointment is necessary.
