La Grange residents smell smoke in the air

Posted: Updated:

LA GRANGE, Ky. (WDRB) -- You can't see it, but some people in La Grange say it's making them sick.

That's why WDRB News spent Thursday trying to find out about the issue up in the air.

"We are about to suffocate from all of the burning that is going on," said a caller to the WDRB Newsroom.

That was just one of a few calls to WDRB News. Viewers asked us to find out what was going on in La Grange.

"I didn't know what it was, to be honest, I was looking around, I was thinking it was a big forest fire or something," said Randell Collier, who lives in La Grange.

Once there, it wasn't easy to see, but the smell was widespread.

"Yeah, it was pretty bad," Collier said.

Collier said it hit him right in the face.

"I was walking up the road and I just smelled this strong acid-like burning smell," he added.

We found the problem at a construction site on New Moody Lane.

"What we have found is that these calls for smoke in the area are the result of some controlled burns," said Major Keith Smith, with La Grange Fire and Rescue Department.

Major Smith said they've been getting calls from concerned neighbors, too. That's even after a Facebook post from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet warning neighbors about the controlled burn.

"It is a little bit widespread, you get a little bit of wind blowing in whatever direction," Major Smith explained.

There is at least one small fire still smoldering and a bigger one that we could not see. Crews are watching them around the clock.

"They are required to have equipment and make access for fire departments out there," Major Smith said.

Kentucky highway officials said the burning is expected to last another week.
