LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Community activist Angela Newby-Bouggess has died.

Family spokesperson Christopher 2X says she died early Monday morning from medical problems. Newby-Bouggess was a peace and justice advocate who worked tirelessly with the community for more than a decade.

Her son Michael Newby was shot and killed by former LMPD Officer McKenzie Mattingly in January of 2004 after an undercover drug deal went wrong. The family settled a federal lawsuit against the officer in 2008.

Newby-Bouggess continued her anti-violence crusade until January of this year by working with the Hood 2 Hood program.
