LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Dr. Doris Tegart has been appointed as the interim president of Bellarmine University.

A release regarding the appointment was issued Tuesday afternoon.

This comes following the death of former president Dr. Joseph McGowan on March 1.

Dr. Tegart's appointment was announced by Patrick Mulloy, chairman of the Board of Trustees. The appointment is effective immediately. Tegart has previously served as the university's executive vice president and she will serve until a new president is selected.

A national search will be conducted for a new university president.

Dr. Tegart has worked at the university for nearly 25 years. Her previous positions have included provost, senior vice president for academic affairs, executive assistant to the president, associate provost, dean, department chair and professor.

"I am honored to serve as the interim leader at Bellarmine and I am especially honored to follow my mentor and friend, Dr. Joseph J. McGowan," Tegart said. "I am committed to building on Dr. McGowan's Vision 2020 and fulfilling the promise for the Bellarmine community."
