LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police have arrested a Campbellsburg, Ky., woman after they say she beat a child so badly she had to miss school.

According to an arrest warrant, 51-year-old Kathy Heitzman physically abused a child under 12 who was in her custody. The alleged abuse took place between Aug. 13, 2015, and Jan. 31, 2016, in Henry County, Kentucky.

Police say she abused the child, "by causing torture, cruel confinement or cruel punishment by screaming and beating her so badly she missed school thereafter to hide the bruises."

According to police, other children in the home witnessed the abuse.

Heitzman allegedly called the child derogatory names, making crude sexual references.

In one instance, police say she beat the child on the front of her body repeatedly with a belt, screaming and knocking her to the ground, ripping her clothes off.

Heitzman is charged with first degree criminal abuse of a child 12 or under, according to an arrest warrant.

She pleaded not guilty at arraignment in Henry District Court at New Castle Wednesday. Another hearing is scheduled for Monday.

As of Wednesday morning, Heitzman was being held in the Oldham County Detention Center.
