LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Trinity picked a bad day for its worst shooting effort of the season. The Shamrocks fell 48-33 to Newport Central Catholic in the opening round of the Boys Sweet Sixteen Wednesday at Rupp Arena in Lexington.
Trinity got out to an 11-2 lead then went ice cold, missing 20 consecutive shots from the field and going scoreless from midway through the first quarter until a baseline jumper by L. J. Harris midway through the third quarter. They were still in the game at that point, down 22-13, but got no closer, finishing 12-of-46 from the field (26%).
Bellarmine signee Ben Weyer led the Thoroughbreds with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 blocks and 2 steals. David Burton led Trinity with 9 points and 5 rebounds.
The Rocks, who replaced the entire starting five from a year ago and start just one senior, finish the season at 29-7.
The 6th Region champions from Doss begin the sweet sixteen Thursday at Noon against Lawrence County. 8th Region champ South Oldham plays Owensboro Catholic at 8:00 pm in its opener.
