Louisville Zoo workers continue watching over baby gorilla after mom dies giving birth

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A day after her mother's death, focus has turned to the baby gorilla born at the Louisville Zoo and making sure she survives.

The baby doesn't have a name yet. The baby was born Monday after an emergency C-section.

Her mother, Mia Moja, passed away yesterday from complications. After being born several weeks early, she's being bottle fed and monitored around the clock.

John Walczak, director of the Louisville Zoo, said, "I've talked to the keeper. She's doing really, really well. We're still very concerned about her. She's premature, like any infant born early, so we're keeping very close eye on her but she's doing very well this morning."

The zoo says the baby's future remains unclear, but zookeepers hope she'll join another gorilla family.

An examination will be done to figure out what caused Mia's death.
