POV | A bad start to the madness

Posted: Updated:

How have CBS, Turner and the NCAA already messed up this year’s Basketball Championship Tournament?   Well first, let’s talk about the overblown, overpadded two hour hype fest that was last Sunday’s NCAA Selection Show. Was sixty minutes not enough for the networks to announce the 68 teams and discuss the matchups?

I know college basketball is big – and bigger here in Louisville than anywhere else. But even we have a limit to how many times we can be told that Cinderellas often pull upsets and Duke is really better than anyone thinks.

But to make matters worse, security suffered a major breakdown, allowing someone to leak the entire bracket over the Internet before it could even be announced. That created confusion for everyone.  If you insist on making your show last an eternity, at least don’t give away the ending before intermission.

And finally – what was the selection committee thinking in keeping both Kentucky and Indiana out of the South Region, where one would have had the chance to advance to Sweet Sixteen play in Louisville? The fans of either team would have flooded Louisville and made it one of the tournament’s most electric sites.  But now – even though their teams are two of the NCAA’s biggest cash cows – neither Wildcat nor Hoosier fans will get to play any closer to home than Des Moines. And that’s a shame.

I’m Bill Lamb and that’s my Point of View.
