Fire destroys 2 southern Indiana homes, families saved from flames

MEMPHIS, Ind. (WDRB) -- A knock on the doors saved several families from an early morning fire.

It happened in Memphis, Indiana on Friday morning. The home owners were inside when they got that lifesaving knock on the door.

Flames and thick black smoke were shooting from the homes on Sunny Brook Drive by the time firefighters arrived.

"It started at the neighbor's house and spread to ours, unfortunately," said Blake Stowell, a fire victim.

One of the homes belongs to Stowell. He was sound asleep when the fire started.

"Somebody woke us up knocking on the door and that's how we woke up and we got everybody outside and unfortunately had to watch it spread," said Stowell.

"We had a pretty good working fire when I got on the scene," said Major Karen Tweedy, with Sellersburg Fire.

No one was hurt, but two homes were destroyed and a third damaged.

"Their garage, the siding has melted a little bit," Major Tweedy said.

The homeowners watched as firefighters knocked down flames and the walls of their homes. And the fire was not the only problem facing crews.

"There's not a real good water supply out here," Major Tweedy explained.

Firefighters had to bring extra water to the scene but it slowed down the process.

"There was nothing to work with, we had the water on our trucks, ah, first truck in has five hundred gallons. Five hundred gallons doesn't last long on this," said Major Tweedy.

Meanwhile, watching their homes burn to the ground was not easy, however, firefighters saved dozens of priceless pictures and other mementos.

"We'll clean 'em and save 'em and hopefully be able to hang 'em back on the wall," said Stowell.

Right now, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
