LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville mother has been charged with a felony after police say she was shot by her own 2-year-old.

According to a criminal summons, it happened on Feb. 12 at the home of 30-year-old Jessica Barkley, on W. Evelyn Avenue, near S. 5th Street.

Police say Barkley put a 9mm handgun loaded with five rounds in her nightstand, where her 2-year-old son was able to get it. According to the summons, the 2-year-old came into her bedroom, opened the drawer and removed the gun from the nightstand. Police say the child was holding the gun and pointing it in Barkley's direction when the gun went off, shooting Barkley.

Barkley as able to take the gun from the child, grab the child and get out of the house.

A neighbor called an ambulance for Barkley, and police were dispatched to the scene.

Barkley was taken to University of Hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. The child was removed from her custody days later.

On March 9, Barkley was charged with first degree wanton endangerment, a felony. She was served a criminal summons and is expected to appear in court on March 29.
