Hardin County family surprised when soldier returns from deployment

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) -- A soldier deployed nearly one year ago secretly returned home this week to surprise his family.
Sgt. James Hare revealed himself Tuesday night, as his five-year-old son, Taylor and some other relatives ate at Cheddars in Elizabethtown.
Video, which can be viewed in the player above, shows Taylor as sees his father, takes off running, and jumps into his arms.
Sgt. Hare, who serves with the U.S. Army, was deployed 11 months ago to Guantanamo Bay.
"I'd seen a lot of videos of families being surprised by troops, and I think it’s so awesome," Sgt. Hare said. "I just love the reaction, so I wanted to try it with my family."
When it came time for Sgt. Hare to return home to Hardin County, he hatched a plan. With the help of his wife, Jennifer, he was able to keep his return a secret.
"I can’t lie and people can read me like a book, so it was really hard to keep quiet," Jennifer said.
“She put a lot of effort into tricking them,” Sgt. Hare said. "I was very proud, and I saw everybody. My mom cried. My mother-in-law cried… I definitely think I was missed."
