LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB News) -- An assistant football coach at Mercer County Senior High School in Harrodsburg has learned an important lesson -- never underestimate the power of teenagers on social media.
Grayson Blevins is a junior at Mercer County and Charlie Cox is an assistant football coach (and an assistant athletic director) at the school.
"He was talking to me about having a hard time finding a prom date," Cox told WDRB News on Wednesday. "He starting joking around and said that he ought to take my fiancee to prom. He asked me, said if he gets 1,000 rewteets could he take her to the prom and I was like, 'That's hilarious, like that will ever happen.'"
Next thing Cox knew, it was on Twitter.
WDRB's Toni Konz reached out to Cox on Tuesday to ask him what the story was behind the tweet. At the time, it only had 200 retweets.
"It's just a good kid doing something goofy to his coach," Cox told WDRB News. "I had no idea that he would get so many retweets. That's OK, it's all in good fun."
Cox's fiance, Chelsea Bemiss, says her phone was ringing off the hook Wednesday as more people found out.
"It's hilarious," she said. "And Grayson is a good kid."
So this thing has a lot more traction than I anticipated.....— Charlie Cox (@CharlieCox66) March 23, 2016
As of 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Blevins' tweet had 935 tweets.
Blevins even got the help of Cox's old friend from high school, Atlanta Falcons tight end Jacob Tamme (the two went to Boyle County High School):
Tamme, who has 48,800 followers, responded:
Last year, Bemiss and Cox chaperoned the Mercer County prom.
Looks like this year, it will be a dinner for three -- Mercer County's prom is set for April 23 at the Mercer County Fairgrounds.
Meanwhile, Cox and Bemiss are getting married June 11.
