Authorities say love triangle was behind Breckinridge County shootings

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A love triangle in Breckinridge County ended with two men dead Thursday -- and another in jail.

Today, we've learned about the teen in the middle, and why deputies no longer think it's a murder-suicide.

It began with two guys and one girl.

"Brandon Williams and Johnny Thompson were seeing the same lady," said Bruce Anthony, Chief Deputy of the Breckinridge County Sheriff's Office.

It's an age-old story that Breckinridge County Deputies say came to a tragic end at an abandoned gas station in Garfield, Kentucky, around 2 p.m. Thursday.

"We found one expired on the ground, and one in the car," said Anthony.

At first investigators thought it was a murder-suicide, but later arrested 22-year-old James Wardrip, a close friend of Johnny Thompson's.

"Actually, one of the witnesses at the scene saw the whole fight and saw Mr. Williams shoot Mr. Thompson," Anthony said. "And at that point, he pointed the gun at James Wardrip, and at that point, James went to the truck, got his weapon and shot Mr. Williams."

Wardrip now faces one count of murder in connection to Williams' death. He's in the Breckinridge County jail.

"Actually, all this started in a Walmart in Hardinsburg," Anthony said.

Investigators say it started with the 19-year-old woman at the heart of the triangle trying to break up with Williams. That led to series of public confrontations with Williams following the teen.

We're told Wardrip and Thompson went to protect the girl, and that's when the shooting occurred.

Officers say Wardrip is cooperating and confessed to his role in Williams' death.

"He gave a statement," Anthony said.

And while behind bars today, self-defense is being considered as a possible motive for Wardrip.

"That will be up to the court system," Anthony said.

Deputies say Wardrip is due in court Tuesday. Thompson's funeral is set for the same day at Alexander Funeral Home in Irvington.
