New Albany Bulldogs receive welcome home fit for state champs

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- It was a celebration 43 years in the making. Now back home from Indianapolis, the New Albany Bulldogs are basking in the excitement of their new basketball state championship title.

The New Albany boys basketball team was welcomed by a standing ovation Sunday as the players made their way into the Doghouse proudly carrying their new hardware and net from the championship game.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, the 2016 Indiana 4A State Champions. Your New Albany Bulldogs!” the announcer roared.

Bleachers on both sides of the gym were packed with adoring fans, and the cheerleaders were not one bit tired of rooting for the champs.

“D-O-G-S, dogs, dogs, dogs,” they cheered.

The Bulldogs beat out McCutcheon High School from Lafayette for the state title, storming to a 62-59 win after trailing at halftime.

“We've been working all season for this,” said sophomore guard Romeo Langford.

The sophomore superstar took a quick break from signing autographs to talk with us. He said he was impressed by all the fans.

“It means a lot. I love the city of New Albany and their coming out and supporting us,” Langford said.

“Having this big of a crowd on a holiday, where most people are with their families ... just coming out to support us is just a great feeling,” junior guard Isaac Hibbard said.

Being part of only the second team in school history to bring back a boys basketball state title, Hibbard feels like he's in a dream.

“Woke up this morning and thought, just wow. What we did last night was so crazy. It hasn't sunk in really, but just thinking about it, oh it's a great feeling,” Hibbard said.

Coach Jim Shannon had a similar feeling.

"There are times when you take a second and go, yeah, it's really happening. When you think of all the times you really weren't sure it was ever going to happen, it kind of eats at you a little bit. But I've got to throw that negativity out, because we did it,” Coach Shannon said.

And very soon there will be another state title banner hanging over the Doghouse.
