Selfie leads to arrest of Louisville man accused of robbing family at gunpoint
Louisville Metro Police say they've arrested a man after he robbed a woman of her smart phone, then used her Snapchat account to post pictures.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A suspected robber has been caught after he took a selfie -- and social media led police straight to him.
The victims recognized one of the alleged robbers on the Snapchat account of their stolen phone.
Latroy Gaston, age 20, took the selfie. Police say Gaston and two other men broke into a home on Wheeler Avenue, near Bicknell Avenue, in January, demanding money. The victims -- a family of six -- say they were home at the time of the break-in. Steven Powers says he was in bed, along with his wife. His son was watching TV. His daughter-in-law, and 1-year-old grand daughter, were also in the home.
Powers says the robbers threatened his family with a gun, holding it to his son's head, before taking wallets and cash.
Hours later, Powers says the family made a shocking discovery. Photos of one of the robbers posted from one of their stolen cell phones.
"Our daughter-in-law, when they took her phone, they happened to run their picture through it, and didn't think they'd get caught," he said. "Well, when they run the snap shot, it showed up on his phone and that's how they got caught."
The victims were able to positively identify Gaston as one of the robbers. Gaston faces robbery charges after he pleaded not guilty in court this morning. He's sitting in jail with $5,000 bond.
