Easter celebration turns tragic after Springfield toddler run over by vehicle

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An Easter celebration came to a tragic end this weekend when a toddler was run over.

The Springfield Police Chief says right now, it looks like a tragic accident.

A picture of the 18-month-old, Christopher Garian, shows a huge smile. It's something a community is forever remembering after the toddler died.

Police Chief Jim Smith says, "The person who got into the vehicle was just going to run up to town a minute, and backed up the vehicle and struck the toddler," said Police Chief Jim Smith. "Very unfortunate and the family is very distraught...It's hard to imagine what they're going through."

It happened on Easter Sunday afternoon in the driveway of a home in Springfield.

Christopher Garian and his parents are from Bardstown and were in Springfield in Washington County celebrating Easter with family.

"It was very traumatic," Smith said. "It was very traumatic at the scene. It was very traumatic at the hospital. We're a small town. We're a small police department. It was hard on all of us."

Washington County EMS rushed Garian to Springview Hospital in Lebanon, but crews were not able to revive him. He was then pronounced dead from his injuries.

"The investigation is still ongoing," Smith said. "We will do a complete and thorough investigation. There are several things we still have to do yet. Everything we have taken so far and what it appears to be, we believe this is just going to be a horrible accident."

A horrible accident, that leaves a family and this community in mourning.

"The person that was driving the vehicle was very distraught," Smith said.

Garian's visitation will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Kappel Funeral Home in Lebanon Junction. His funeral will be at 7 p.m. that day.
