LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Bullitt County officials say a man died after a train slammed into his car Tuesday morning.

The victim was not immediately identified.

Bullitt County Emergency Services spokesperson Mike Riordan says the crash happened in the Brooks area of Bullitt County around Highway 1020 and East Blue Lick Road.

A department of transportation employee who witnessed the crash says the driver of the car tried to beat the train across the tracks.

On Tuesday afternoon, a spokesperson for CSX Transportation sent a statement:

"Just after 8:30 this morning, a CSX freight train struck an occupied vehicle on the tracks at the Blue Lick Road crossing in Bullitt County, Kentucky. CSX personnel responded to the scene to assist Bullitt County first responders. Bullitt County confirmed that the driver was fatally injured. Our sympathies are with those affected by this collision. CSX thanks the Hillview Police Department for their quick and professional response. The train was carrying mixed freight from Birmingham, Alabama, to Cincinnati, Ohio, and the crew was not injured. Our investigators are working with Hillview Police officers to determine the circumstances of the collision. Blue Lick Road has reopened to traffic and normal train operations will resume shortly."
