Oscar-winning actress Patty Duke dies

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Associated Press reports that Oscar-winning actress Patty Duke has died at the age of 69.

She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the 1962 film "The Miracle Worker." At the time of her victory she was 16 years old, making Duke the youngest actress ever to win a competitive Oscar. She starred in the film alongside Anne Bancroft, who also won an Oscar for the movie.

Duke went on to star in "The Patty Duke Show" from 1963-66. She also appeared in several other motion pictures and made for television films.

During her career, Duke received several honors including multiple Golden Globe Awards and Emmy Awards.

She also served as a president of the Screen Actors Guild during the 1980s.

Duke, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, was a public advocate for mental health wellness and treatment.

Duke was married and the mother of three children, including "Lord of the Rings" actor Sean Astin.
