LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools is offering a variety of free spring break camps at several locations next week.

The camps -- featuring aquatics, chess, culinary arts, karate, photography, robotics and yoga -- are for students in kindergarten through fifth-grade and will be held April 4 through April 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at nine locations.

District officials say the camps are part of the district's “Literacy &” program and provide a fun and safe environment for students while school is out. The “Literacy &” program connects literacy instruction to character-building opportunities using grade-level appropriate books with themes connected to each program.

“One of our district’s key goals...focuses on comprehensive strategies that provide the deeper learning necessary to prepare, empower and inspire all students to reach their full potential,” said Superintendent Donna Hargens. "Our JCPS spring break camps help play a critical role in that effort. These camps empower our students to learn a new activity, while simultaneously strengthening literacy skills and building character.”
